Three parts behind every answer
Every assistant, whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot, has three parts. Picture a restaurant. The Jargon busterModel: What training produces: a very large set of numbers that captures patterns, used to make predictions. is the chef, cooking with skills learnt in training. The app is the restaurant, where you order and your booking is kept. Tools are the suppliers, bringing in fresh ingredients the kitchen doesn’t stock.
So when you need something current, or from your own files, check that a tool was used: look for sources, or a sign it read the file.
- The modelWrites each reply by predicting likely words. On its own, it knows only what it learnt in training.
- The appYour chats, settings and memory. It decides which tools the model can use.
- The toolsWeb search, file reading and calculations. They fetch or do what the model can’t.
