Privacy notice

We collect as little as we can: your email address and how you want your briefing. We never sell your data, and we never send it to AI models.

Draft for legal review. This page sets out how Unjargoned intends to work. It will be checked by a lawyer before launch, and may change.

Who we are

Unjargoned is published by [company name to be confirmed], company number [company number to be confirmed], of [registered address to be confirmed]. We are the controller of the personal data described here, registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office under number [ICO registration number to be confirmed].

What we collect

WhatWhen
Your email addressWhen you subscribe or join a waitlist.
Your briefing settingsYour level, editions, interests and how often you want the email, when you subscribe or change them.
ReferralsYour referral code, and which friend’s code you signed up with, if any.
Messages to usYour email address, your name if you give it, what you write and the page you wrote from, when you use the chat, the contact page or email us.
MembershipsIf you’re on Pro, Pro+ or Teams: your plan, its dates and how it’s paid for.
Level votes“Was this the right level?” answers. We store a scrambled version of a random number from your browser, so we can count one vote per person without knowing who you are.
Email engagementWhether you open the email and which links you click, recorded by our email provider.
Links to toolsHow many times a link to a tool in our portal is followed, and from which page. Only the count: nothing about who clicked. When a link is a partner’s, the partner’s own site may record that you came from us, under its own privacy notice, so it can pay us a commission.
AnalyticsWhich pages and features are used, only if you accept analytics cookies.
Server logsYour IP address and browser details when you visit, kept briefly for security.

Why, and on what basis

  • Sending you the briefing, at your level and on your schedule: your consent, which you give by subscribing and confirming your email address. You can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing.
  • Waitlists: your consent, to email you when Pro, Teams, the AI tutor, experts or a new edition opens.
  • Analytics: your consent, through the cookie banner. Turn it off at any time on our cookies page.
  • Answering your messages: our legitimate interest in replying to you and keeping a record of what we said.
  • Memberships: the contract with you, or with your employer for Teams.
  • Level votes, security and preventing abuse: our legitimate interest in improving the briefing and keeping the service safe.

We do not sell your data, use it to target ads at you, or make automated decisions about you that have legal effects.

Who processes it

These companies process data for us, under contracts that only let them use it to provide their service to us:

  • beehiiv sends our emails and holds your email address and briefing settings. It is based in the US; transfers are made under the UK’s approved safeguards.
  • Vercel hosts the website, and Supabase hosts our database.
  • PostHog provides analytics from its EU servers, only if you accept analytics cookies.
  • Postmark sends our replies to your messages by email, and receives the emails you send us. It is based in the US; transfers are made under the UK’s approved safeguards.
  • Anthropic provides the AI models that help draft and check stories, from news sources. When someone on our team asks it to draft a reply to your message, it also receives your message and your briefing settings; a person checks every reply before it is sent. Under its commercial terms, Anthropic does not train its models on this data.

How long we keep it

  • Subscriber details: while you’re subscribed, then 30 days after you unsubscribe, so we can honour it everywhere.
  • Waitlists: until the product opens and we have emailed you, then 12 months.
  • Messages to us: two years after the conversation closes, or sooner if you ask us to delete them.
  • Memberships: while you’re a member and for a year afterwards. Invoices are kept for six years, as UK law requires.
  • Level votes: they can’t identify you, so we keep them to tune the briefing.
  • Server logs: up to 30 days.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, object to or restrict how we use it, and ask for it in a portable format. Change your settings or unsubscribe yourself with the link at the foot of every briefing. Unjargoned is not for children under 13.
