Our verdict
Being tested. An editor is using Bolt.new hands-on; the verdict and score appear here once they sign it off.
What it does
Bolt.new, from StackBlitz, builds web apps from a description in plain English. It writes the code and runs the app inside your browser, so you see a working preview straight away and can keep asking for changes.
You can edit the code yourself or publish the app to the web. It suits prototypes and simple apps; bigger projects need someone who can read the code.
Why use it
- A working preview in your browser, with nothing to install.
- Change the app by describing what you want, or edit the code directly.
- Publish it to the web when it’s ready.
- It uses popular web frameworks, so a developer can take the project further.
How it works
- Go to bolt.new and describe the app you want.
- Watch it write the code and start a live preview.
- Ask for changes in plain English, one at a time.
- Edit the code yourself if you know how.
- Publish the app when you’re happy with it.
How hard is it to use?
Intermediate Some set-up, or a little practice, to get good results.
Easy to start, but fixing problems in a growing app means understanding the code it writes, which is why we rate it Intermediate.
What it costs
Free plan; paid plans. A free plan with daily and monthly limits on AI use, and free publishing with a “Made in Bolt” badge. Paid Pro and Teams plans add more AI use, remove the badge and include hosting.
Prices change often, so check Bolt.new’s own site before you pay.
Watch out for
- Your AI allowance can run out quickly on bigger apps, and asking it to fix errors uses it too.
- Have someone review security before real customers or real data use the app.
- Large apps can become hard to change by description alone.
Your data
Check StackBlitz’s privacy policy and terms for whether your prompts and code are used to train AI models before you include private data or customer details.
We haven’t confirmed that Bolt.new can keep your data in the UK, so check where it keeps your data before you share anything private or about other people.
