Translates text and documents between many languages, and its DeepL Write tool corrects and polishes your writing.

Our verdict

Being tested. An editor is using DeepL hands-on; the verdict and score appear here once they sign it off.

What it does

DeepL translates text and whole documents, such as Word, PowerPoint and PDF files, between many languages. DeepL Write, part of the same service, corrects and rephrases text you wrote yourself, in British or American English and several other languages.

It suits anyone writing to customers, suppliers or colleagues in another language, or wanting a second opinion on their own wording. Paid plans raise the limits, add glossaries for your own terms and keep your texts out of its AI training.

Why use it

  • Translate whole Word, PowerPoint and PDF files, not just pasted text.
  • DeepL Write fixes mistakes and suggests clearer wording, including in British English.
  • Glossaries on paid plans keep names and key terms translated the same way every time.
  • On paid plans your texts are deleted after translation and never used to train its AI.

How it works

  1. Go to deepl.com, or download the DeepL app.
  2. Paste your text or upload a document, and pick the language you want.
  3. Read the translation and check names, numbers and key terms.
  4. Open DeepL Write to polish text you have written in your own language.
  5. Upgrade to a paid plan before translating anything with personal or confidential details.

How hard is it to use?

Beginner Easy to start. You need an account, not any technical know-how.

Paste text and the translation appears straight away, so anyone can use it, which is why we rate it Beginner.

What it costs

Free plan; paid plans. The free version has limits on how much you can translate and on file size. Paid plans for individuals, teams and businesses raise those limits and add glossaries and data protection, and DeepL Write Pro is a paid add-on.

Prices change often, so check DeepL’s own site before you pay.

Watch out for

  • The free version’s terms say you mustn’t use it for texts containing personal data, so use a paid plan for anything about customers or staff.
  • Translations can still get meaning, tone or technical terms wrong, so have anything important checked by a fluent speaker.
  • DeepL Write works in fewer languages than the translator.

Your data

On the free version DeepL keeps your texts for a limited time to train its AI; on paid plans texts are deleted once translated and never used for training. Data is processed in DeepL’s own European data centres and on Amazon Web Services in Europe, the US and Asia-Pacific, and some team and business plans can choose a single region, such as the EU.

We haven’t confirmed that DeepL can keep your data in the UK, so check where it keeps your data before you share anything private or about other people.
