Mistral AI’s assistant, formerly Le Chat, for writing, questions and summaries, from a French company.

Our verdict

Being tested. An editor is using Mistral Vibe hands-on; the verdict and score appear here once they sign it off.

What it does

Mistral Vibe, called Le Chat until May 2026, is the AI assistant from Mistral AI, a French company based in Paris. Like ChatGPT or Claude, it writes and edits, answers questions and summarises documents, it can search the web, and you can attach files and images for it to work from. A Work mode carries out longer tasks in apps you connect, and a Code mode is for developers.

It suits people who would rather use a European assistant, and its free plan is enough to try it on everyday tasks.

Why use it

  • It writes, edits and summarises in plain English, like the other big assistants.
  • It can search the web, and work from files and images you attach.
  • It is made by a European company, Mistral AI.
  • The free plan covers quick answers and simple everyday tasks.

How it works

  1. Go to chat.mistral.ai, or download Mistral’s app, and create a free account.
  2. Type what you need in plain English: the task, who it is for and the tone.
  3. Attach a document or image if it should work from one.
  4. Ask for changes until the answer is right.
  5. Check facts, names and figures before you use the result anywhere that matters.

How hard is it to use?

Beginner Easy to start. You need an account, not any technical know-how.

As easy to start as any chat assistant: type a question and read the answer.

What it costs

Free plan; paid plans. A free plan with limits. The paid Pro plan raises the limits for complex tasks and coding, and there are Team and Enterprise plans for organisations.

Prices change often, so check Mistral Vibe’s own site before you pay.

Watch out for

  • Like every assistant, it can state wrong facts confidently. Check anything that matters.
  • Don’t paste in confidential work unless your employer allows it.

Your data

Mistral says chats on its Free, Pro and Student plans can be used to train its models unless you turn this off in your settings: under Privacy on the web, or Data & Account Controls in the app. Team admins can turn it off for everyone, and Enterprise plans are opted out from the start. Turn it off before you share anything personal.

We haven’t confirmed that Mistral Vibe can keep your data in the UK, so check where it keeps your data before you share anything private or about other people.
