Our verdict
Being tested. An editor is using NaturalReader hands-on; the verdict and score appear here once they sign it off.
What it does
NaturalReader reads text aloud. Paste in text or open a document, PDF or web page, and it reads it in a choice of voices, highlighting the words as it goes. Paid plans let you save the audio as a file.
It suits students, people with dyslexia and anyone who prefers to listen. There are separate plans for personal and commercial use.
Why use it
- It reads documents, PDFs and web pages aloud.
- It highlights words as it reads, which helps people with reading difficulties.
- Paid plans save the audio so you can listen later.
How it works
- Go to the NaturalReader website, or add its browser extension.
- Paste in text or upload a document.
- Choose a voice and a reading speed, then press play.
- On a paid plan, save the audio as a file.
How hard is it to use?
Beginner Easy to start. You need an account, not any technical know-how.
Paste and press play, which is why we rate it Beginner.
What it costs
Free plan; paid plans. A free plan with standard voices and limited use of the more natural ones. Paid personal plans add more voices and audio downloads, and using the audio commercially needs a commercial plan.
Prices change often, so check NaturalReader’s own site before you pay.
Watch out for
- Audio you publish, such as in a video, needs a commercial plan.
- The free voices sound more robotic than the paid ones.
