Our verdict

Being tested. An editor is using ProWritingAid hands-on; the verdict and score appear here once they sign it off.

What it does

ProWritingAid checks your writing for grammar, spelling and style. Alongside the usual corrections, it produces reports on things such as overused words, repetition, sentence length and readability, and it can suggest AI rewrites of a sentence.

It suits novelists, students and people who write long documents, and it works in your browser and in Microsoft Word.

Why use it

  • Reports show patterns in your writing, such as overused words and very long sentences.
  • It works in your browser and in Microsoft Word, as well as on its own website.
  • You can set it to British English, so it won’t flag “colour” or “organise”.
  • Paid plans check documents of any length, from reports to novels.

How it works

  1. Create a free account on the ProWritingAid website.
  2. Paste in your text, or install the browser extension or the Word add-in.
  3. Choose British English in the settings.
  4. Work through the underlined suggestions, accepting the ones you agree with.
  5. Run a report, such as overused words, to see patterns in your writing.

How hard is it to use?

Beginner Easy to start. You need an account, not any technical know-how.

Basic checking is as easy as any spellchecker, which is why we rate it Beginner. The reports take a little longer to learn, but you can ignore them until you need them.

What it costs

Free plan; paid plans. The free plan checks a limited number of words at a time and includes a few AI rewrites a day. The paid Premium and Premium Pro plans check documents of any length, and Premium Pro raises the limits on the AI features.

Prices change often, so check ProWritingAid’s own site before you pay.

Watch out for

  • The number of suggestions can be overwhelming, so focus on the ones that matter for your piece.
  • Style rules can flag choices you made on purpose, so use your own judgement.
  • Don’t check confidential documents unless your organisation allows it.

Your data

Check ProWritingAid’s privacy policy for how it stores your documents and whether your text is used to improve its AI before you check anything confidential.

We haven’t confirmed that ProWritingAid can keep your data in the UK, so check where it keeps your data before you share anything private or about other people.
