Our verdict

What it does
Replit is an online workspace for building software. Its AI, Replit Agent, builds an app from a description in plain English: it writes the code, sets up a database and shows you a working version you can keep changing.
Hosting is built in, so you can publish from the same place. It suits beginners making prototypes and developers who want to code in the browser.
Why use it
- Go from a description to a working app without installing anything.
- Publish your app to the web from the same place you build it.
- Ask for changes in plain English, or edit the code yourself.
- Phone apps let you check and change projects away from your desk.
How it works
- Sign up at replit.com and describe the app you want.
- Check the plan Replit Agent suggests, then let it build.
- Try the preview and ask for changes one at a time.
- Add a database or sign-in when you need them.
- Publish the app when you’re happy with it.
How hard is it to use?
Intermediate Some set-up, or a little practice, to get good results.
Easy to start, harder to finish: as an app grows, you need to understand what it built to fix problems, which is why we rate it Intermediate.
What it costs
Free plan; paid plans. The free Starter plan has a daily allowance of Agent work and one published app. Paid Core and Pro plans include monthly credits for AI work and hosting, and Agent work is charged by how much effort each request takes.
Prices change often, so check Replit’s own site before you pay.
Watch out for
- Agent work beyond your plan’s allowance costs extra, so watch your spending.
- Have someone review security before real customers or real data use the app.
- Large apps can become hard to change by description alone.
Your data
Check Replit’s privacy policy and terms for whether your code and prompts are used to train AI models, and what your plan lets you switch off, before you build with private data.
We haven’t confirmed that Replit can keep your data in the UK, so check where it keeps your data before you share anything private or about other people.
