Our verdict
Being tested. An editor is using Devin Desktop hands-on; the verdict and score appear here once they sign it off.
What it does
Devin Desktop is an AI code editor from Cognition, the company behind the Devin coding agent. It was called Windsurf until June 2026, when Cognition renamed it in an update that kept users’ plans, settings and extensions.
Alongside the full editor, it puts an “Agent Command Center” front and centre for running and tracking several AI agents at once. It is made for developers.
Why use it
- Its agents can make changes across many files from one instruction.
- The “Agent Command Center” lets you run several agents and follow them on a board.
- Unlimited Tab completions as you type, even on the free plan.
- It runs on Mac, Windows and Linux.
How it works
- Download Devin Desktop for Mac, Windows or Linux and sign in.
- Open your project folder.
- Press Tab to accept suggestions as you type.
- Give an agent a task in plain English and follow its progress in the “Agent Command Center”.
- Review every change before you keep it.
How hard is it to use?
Advanced Made for people at home with technical tools, or ready to learn them.
Made for developers: you need to read and judge code to use it safely, which is why we rate it Advanced.
What it costs
Free plan; paid plans. A free plan with a light daily and weekly allowance for agents, a limited choice of AI models and unlimited Tab completions. Pro and Max plans raise the allowance and add more models, and Teams and Enterprise plans add admin controls.
Prices change often, so check Devin Desktop’s own site before you pay.
Watch out for
- It was renamed from Windsurf in June 2026, so older guides and videos use the old name.
- Review agent changes carefully: they can introduce subtle bugs.
- Heavy agent use can run through your daily and weekly allowance quickly.
Your data
Its terms say your code and prompts may be used to train its models by default. On paid plans you can opt out in the Data Controls settings, which also stops its AI model providers keeping your data; on Teams plans only an admin can do this.
We haven’t confirmed that Devin Desktop can keep your data in the UK, so check where it keeps your data before you share anything private or about other people.
