Our verdict

What it does
Leonardo.Ai makes images, and short videos, from text descriptions, with more controls than simpler tools: you can choose between models and styles, keep a character or look consistent, and train it on your own images.
Canva bought it in 2024. It suits designers, marketers and game makers who want to fine-tune their results.
Why use it
- Many models and styles to choose from.
- Tools to keep characters and styles consistent across images.
- A free allowance of credits to try it.
How it works
- Sign up on the Leonardo.Ai website.
- Choose a model or style, then describe the image.
- Adjust settings such as the image size and how closely it follows your description.
- Generate, refine the best result and download it.
How hard is it to use?
Intermediate Some set-up, or a little practice, to get good results.
Easy to make a first image, but the many settings take time to learn, which is why we rate it Intermediate.
What it costs
Free plan; paid plans. A free plan with a daily allowance of credits. Paid plans add more credits, private images and features such as your own trained models.
Prices change often, so check Leonardo.Ai’s own site before you pay.
Watch out for
- Everything you make on the free plan is public, and Leonardo.Ai may use it, so use a paid plan for client work.
- Only upload images you have the right to use.
Your data
Images made on the free plan are public, and Leonardo.Ai can reuse them. Paid plans keep your images private, and Leonardo.Ai says it won’t use private content to train its models without your consent.
We haven’t confirmed that Leonardo.Ai can keep your data in the UK, so check where it keeps your data before you share anything private or about other people.
