What it does
Mailchimp is an email marketing service. You build a mailing list, design emails from templates, and send newsletters and automated emails, such as a welcome message for new subscribers, then see who opened and clicked. Its AI, Intuit Assist, helps write and rewrite emails and subject lines.
It is owned by Intuit, the maker of QuickBooks, and suits small businesses, charities and clubs.
Why use it
- Templates make good-looking emails easy.
- Automated emails, such as welcomes and reminders, run by themselves.
- Reports show who opened and clicked.
- AI helps draft subject lines and content.
How it works
- Sign up and import your contacts, or add a sign-up form to your website.
- Choose a template and write your email, with AI help if you like.
- Send a test to yourself, then send or schedule it.
- Check the report to learn what your readers respond to.
How hard is it to use?
Beginner Easy to start. You need an account, not any technical know-how.
Made for beginners: templates and step-by-step guidance.
What it costs
Free plan; paid plans. A free plan for small lists, with monthly and daily limits on sending. Paid plans (Essentials, Standard and Premium) are priced by your number of contacts and add automations and more features.
Prices change often, so check Mailchimp’s own site before you pay.
Watch out for
- Costs rise with your number of contacts, so remove people who never open.
- Only email people who have agreed to hear from you, as UK rules on marketing emails require.
Your data
Your subscriber list is personal data you are responsible for. Check Mailchimp’s privacy policy for how its AI features use your content and where data is stored.
We haven’t confirmed that Mailchimp can keep your data in the UK, so check where it keeps your data before you share anything private or about other people.
