What it does
FreeAgent is UK accounting software for freelancers, sole traders, partnerships and small limited companies. It brings in bank transactions, sends invoices, tracks expenses and time, and keeps a running estimate of the tax you owe. It files VAT returns and Self Assessment to HMRC.
It is owned by NatWest Group and is free for eligible NatWest, RBS, Ulster Bank NI and Mettle business customers.
Why use it
- A tax timeline shows what you owe and when each payment is due.
- It files VAT returns and Self Assessment to HMRC.
- It is free with eligible NatWest, RBS, Ulster Bank NI and Mettle business accounts.
- Its plain wording suits people who aren’t accountants.
How it works
- Start the free trial, or switch it on through your bank if it is included.
- Connect your business bank account.
- Sort each transaction into a category, or confirm the one it suggests.
- Add receipts in the app so they are attached to your records.
- Check your tax timeline, then file your returns or give your accountant access.
How hard is it to use?
Intermediate Some set-up, or a little practice, to get good results.
Friendlier than most accounting software, with plain wording and a tax timeline, but you still need to learn how to categorise transactions and handle VAT, so we rate it Intermediate.
What it costs
Paid plans; free with some bank accounts. Monthly plans priced by type of business (sole trader, partnership or limited company), with a free trial. It is free for eligible NatWest Group and Mettle business banking customers.
Prices change often, so check FreeAgent’s own site before you pay.
Watch out for
- Free access depends on keeping an eligible bank account (and, with Mettle, using it each month), so check the conditions.
- Check the categories and VAT before you file.
- Businesses that need stock control may need other software.
